about
St Martin's Day, on 11 November, is known as Martinmas and is one of the 'term' days in Scotland. It is a day of endings and new beginnings. It also heralds the start of winter. St. Martin famously gave half his cloak to a beggar freezing in the snow.
lyrics
You so often claimed you were leaving,
That I never thought you would go.
We'd squabbled so much,
I knew all your replies,
I could pick out the truth,
From the bluffs and the lies,
'til the night that you left,
With your usual goodbyes.
You turned your face upwards to kiss me,
As we both knew you would by the door.
I'd presumed so much,
I was caught by surprise,
That the lips can make clear,
what the glib tongue denies,
And I felt that your kiss,
Then I saw that your eyes,
Held the warmth of the November snow.
You left me a gift at your leaving,
You taught me to wait and abide.
It was an ending at least,
To all the lows and the highs,
And the spirit may fall,
But the head will devise,
A method for fooling,
The heart to arise.
This world has it's ways and it's seasons,
and moves to it's own secret pulse.
Soon the earth will raise blooms,
From the spot where life dies,
And those left will take solace,
From Nature's disguise,
But until then I'll bear,
All your cold kiss implies,
All the warmth of the November snow.
