about

Partly inspired by poet Stevie Smith and partly by the lyric to Simon & Garfunkel's The Boxer, this song had the working title of 'morbid song' for its morbidly introspective character.

lyrics

I left for work today,
and nobody said goodbye to me.
I went to bed last night,
and no-one said goodnight.
And now I'm waking, sleeping,
in the extreme foreground of history.
Where they make their plans and scheme and plot,
and dream and live and laugh behind my back.

I stopped believing,
in fairy-tales today,
when I knew I'd never love again,
and no-one would love me.
And now I'm waving, drowning,
but the water keeps on rising.
And still I'm holding out a cold, white hand,
for anyone to cling to if they can.

I'm a poorly-sketched stock character,
in a meaningless black comedy.
A two-dimensional figure,
representing Nobody.
And now I'm falling, rising,
but I will rise again,
to take my bow before the laughter,
falling like hard stones upon my head.
