The basic chord structure of this song was written by an American friend and musician Bill Riley. Bill had toyed with it for years and wanted to turn it into a song about a long-lost love from his teens whom he had known in the UK. He asked us to finish it as he thought it would suit our melancholy style. Ae Fond Kiss by Robert Burns is also a partial inspiration for this.
lyrics
Down by the shore,
I called your name,
Into the face of the gale,
But I did it just the same.
You come and go for me,
Just like the tide.
Still I'm by your side.
I walked alone,
'til it was light,
I heard a voice far behind me,
calling through the night.
I'm trailing sorrow,
to be it's guide.
Till I'm by your side.
I'll retrace my steps,
Go back the way I came,
But everything changes,
And nothing stays the same.
The sea sweeps our footprints away,
It cannot be denied.
Will I be by your side?
Had we never met,
We could never part,
And what has never been,
Can't leave it's trace on your heart.
It may seem an old, old song,
but the truth will abide.
Still I'm by your side.
